Textures disappear when I switch to torches or saplings ever since the update that changed the world

Ever since the update that changed the world, this annoying glitch happens when I switch to a torch or a twig. All block textures disappear. I can see nothing but torches, monsters, distant lava and/or other entities. I have found a way to bring the textures back, but it happens again when I switch to a torch or twig. It's hard to enjoy your game when you can't use the primary light source because it causes the game to be practically unplayable.
