Spawn eggs aren't expended when making baby mobs while in survival/hardcore mode

a player is in Survival mode or in Hardcore mode loving life.
the player obtains a cow spawn egg (prize/found/gift/hack/whatever).
the player clicks on a cow with the cow spawn egg.
_Poof a baby cow is born. (and there was much rejoicing)

What I expect to happen:
the spawn egg is expended during "the miracle of life"

What actually happen:
the spawn egg is still in inventory so the player can do this again and again and again ...

Steps to Reproduce:
follow the steps above with any spawn eggs that makes a baby would work.

To be clear...
This is not an issue in Creative mode nor is this a baby issue, I love babies, they are delicious (veal - mmmm - /drool) oh but I digress... This issue deals with the failure of the program to recognize the use of the spawn egg and remove it from inventory just like if everything else in the game.
