Command block command /spawnpoint is not working

Im trying to make a PvP arena with command blocks, but I can't get the command [/spawnpoint @a] to work in a command. The normal [/spawnpoint player] works, but when I substitute @a for the players name in the command block it doesn't work. It simply says "[17:33:37] That player cannot be found".
