No Player damage/Falling damage in 1.7.2

What I expected to happen was...:
Attack a player and hear damage being taken

What actually happened was...:
No damage sounds were heard even though all volume settings where on full

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Attack a player
2. Take fall damage
3. Hear no sounds regarding damage
