xp lose on exiting the nether

i was playing on a private whitelisted server with me being the only one online i was using a portal to jump across the map with a portal that has 2 overworld connections but 1 in the nether any way before i went in i had 17 levels of xp but after i when on the other overworld side i had 0 levels and it sucks because i was just about to use an anvil.
