It will not let me play

It won't let me get into my Minecraft so I can play Survival or Creative or Multiplayer. It won't even let me in to look at the home page. For some reason, it wouldn't download when I click on the "Play" button even though I have the automatic downloader for the latest versions, even though I have 1.7.2 already.
