Unable to Join Servers

I cannot connect to any 1.7.2 servers even when connected to the internet

I expected to see the normal server Icons when going to the multilayer menu
All i got was could not connect to server

1. Open multiplayer menu in 1.7.2 on a Windows Vista Computer.
