Launcher Doesn't Open Game When I Click "Play"

The Minecraft launcher doesn't allow the game to open
What I expected to happen was I would click the "Play" button in the launcher and the game would open.
The game should open when you click the play button.

What actually happened was the game didn't open.
I opened the launcher as usually would, and when I clicked the "Play" button, the launcher re-opened instead of opening the game. Every time I click play this happens now. I just can't get the game to open, only the launcher opens. I tried re-installing the game but it does the same thing.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open minecraft launcher
2. Click Play
3. Watch as launcher doesn't open Minecraft but re-opens the launcher menu instead. Every single time.
