Whenever a torch is held in hand, most solid blocks go completely transparent

I was expecting that I could just hold the torch to place it down

what actually happened was immediately when I held the torch in my hand, all of the solid blocks went transparent.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make a new survival world
2. get enough resources to make torches
3. hold the torch in your hand
