Breeding problem

I opened up a new world and saw some chickens. I wanted to capture them with some wheat I found in chest (spawner). I went to them with the wheat but they were just standing there. I trapped them in a hole with water and tried to breed them (right-click) but that didn't work, I didn't lose the wheat nor did they get floating hearts. The same thing happened with sheep/pigs/cows. This is in Survival AND Creative. Single player AND Multiplayer. It really annoys me and hope you'll be able to fix it in a future patch.
