Screen going black with night vision in water

What I expected to happen was...:
I should continue to see normal

What actually happened was...:
Everything went black, but disappeared when leaving water.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Be under water in unlit cave
2. Go around until it happens

When I went under water all was fine until suddenly everything went black. When drinking milk or leaving the unlit water, it disappeared.
