Minecraft crashes when placing items into inventory

Using Windows in XP service pck 3 compatibility mode

What I expected to happen was putting items into inventory
Describe what you thought should happen here- items should have been placed into inventory

What actually happened was a minecraft closed and went to launcher and generated a crash report.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. In creative mode place items into inventory- inventory not full
