Night Vision turns vision black when near no light unless light is in a radius

What I expected to happen was...:
That the night vision potion would make my vision clearer

What actually happened was...:
My screen went black and all I could see was the item in my hand and my hotbar

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Dig a hole down for say 40 blocks and go into the wall for about 50-100 blocks
2. Splash the night vision on
3. Screen should go pitch black
