Gravel eats quickly placed blocks

Quickly mining gravel while holding a block (solid or non-solid) and placing it before the gravel has time to fall makes the block disappear. I then remove the gravel that has fallen, and right-click the item slot I was holding the block in, while aiming at the place where I wanted to place the block, to make it appear there.
