Placing block on self via fence

I was playing a PvP game wherein you have only half a heart. And I discovered (the hard way) that if you place a block on a fence when you are standing next to the fence, you place that block on yourself. Normally, nothing happens when you place a block on yourself, but if you are next to a fence and place it on the fence, it happens anyway.

I ended up accidentally placing a block on myself via the fence and killing myself through suffocation damage.

Please fix this, and it causes much grief and anger for those inconvenienced by it.
