releasing the control key before releasing the mouse is interpreted as holding down (mac)

pretty sure this will be classified as a dupe but i looked through some others and none quite matched the problem I'm having:

holding down control, holding down click, releasing control, releasing click is interpreted as still holding down right-click

holding down click, holding down control, releasing control, releasing click is interpreted as still holding down left-click

this makes if very hard to fire a bow, as well as to place and break blocks. I tried changing my "use item" button from control to something else, didn't help.
