The 'Error: Connect' message will not stop.

Whenever I try to log into any multiplayer server, the strange message 'Error: connect' pops up on the multiplayer screen. It only stops when I go to a brand new server that I've never been to, but then after a few plays of that server, it happens again. I'm not entirely sure what's wrong with it, everything I've tried fails.
