Died to smooth elytra landing

I am on a private SMP, and flying on my elytra over spawn. I have full health with protection 4 netherite armor. I am slowly gliding down for a smooth landing, however when I touch down I immediately die with the death message "KV2023 fell from a high place". I was moving at a speed that normally would have taken half a heart, if any health at all. This led to my armor and tools being looted by my enemies. I have no idea why this happened, as I have landed at this speed before and survived. This is the second time this has happened on this server, and I'm tired of having to get all of my gear back.
