Frequent OpenGL Renderer crash, probably caused by Glowing effect and Teams
This is a vanilla client-side issue when playing on the multiplayer servers Hypixel.net and Manacube. The screen freezes (indicating a OpenGL renderer crash), which appears to be caused by the Glowing effect.
While Manacube uses a resource pack, Hypixel doesn't, so the issue is not resource pack dependent.
To reproduce
This issue is really easy to reproduce on my end.
Go on alpha.hypixel.net. If it doesn't let you join you, it's because they closed their server.
If you manage to get into alpha.hypixel.net, use the Compass and click on the Earth Head that will send you from Skyblock. From there use /centauri in the chat to cheat yourself Levels. Then use /warp Dungeons and start a Dungeon run, like I did on the video.
Otherwise, you need to go on hypixel.net and enter Skyblock. Apparently you need a Level to access Dungeons.
- Start a Hypixel Skyblock Dungeon Run on 1.21.3
- Use F5 to switch to third-person (you should see a green outline behind you)
- Now just play the game (see the video I linked)
- You may also try to constantly press F5 key until the game crashes.
Expected Result
No crash.
Actual Result
The game itself does not crash, so there are no crash logs.
However, the OpenGL Renderer does eventually crash. This means that I can still hear sound and the game intercepts my Keyboard and Mouse Input, but you can't see anything, the screen will only show the last frame before it crashed.

Recording of Crash that I sent to Hypixel (that means some things I say were meant for Hypixel): https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/o7sslsq5mpr97a3uhhves/I_want_to_disable_highlights_to_debug_this_crash.mp4?rlkey=zqkdji9aiefixx1qtwu79bihd&st=c0w5r2we&dl=0
Pure Vanilla, no modifications, the video was in 1.21.1. But I just tested and crashed the OpenGL Renderer on 1.21.3 as well.
Affected versions
This is a very old issue. I encountered this issue many years ago, across couple of Minecraft versions. It does not occur in 1.8.9, but in newer versions like 1.21.1 and 1.21.3.
Device Information
Driver Download Version Name: gfx_win_101.2115, approved version by Intel Support, apparently specialized in fixing Vulkan API related things. Effectively worked on Nintendo Switch related Emulators for certain compilation of shaders.
Notes
According to reverse engineers that I reached out to in hope they could help me debug this issue. They've told me that the OpenGL Renderer Crashes, and that there's no way to log more info out of it without using MCP-Reborn and Decompile Minecraft to print out issues.
If you have anything that I should try to obtain more logs, let me know. I have Discord, I can follow instructions, I have experience with Reporting Bugs on other companies like Discord and Roblox. So let me know.
