Ender dragon can fly through the ground

In the end, the ender dragon can fly (I can see it) through the ground (soulsand) to hit me in a underground base, and destroy all the items that I put the floor (while I'm underground severals blocks) except soulsand. I is supposed to move through soulsand like it was air?
