Sugarcane can be placed without water

Unsure if this is a duplicate or not, but I could not find anything so here we go

If you were to place a one block tall sugarcane next to a water source, and then remove the water source, the sugarcane would remain until you update the block (e.g placing another piece of sugarcane on top of the bugged one or smthg). This was tested on a superflat creative world, and can be seen below:
