Crossbows without quick charge don't charge properly, leaving a ghost item

I've had multiple times where I've tried to charge a crossbow, only for the "Crossbow loads" sound to not play and the crossbow to be unable to shoot the arrow that is visibly loaded into it. The crossbow resets to an uncharged state whenever I pick it up in my inventory and place it back down.
