I applied sharpness enchantment to a sword and the attack damage did not increase

 

What I expected to happen was...: my sword to increase in attack damage

What actually happened was...: my sword did not increase in attack damage

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get a sword.
2. Get an enchanted book with sharpness. (any level) 
3. Enchant the sword.
