Unable to connect to server

When I try to connect to a realm, one of two issues occurs:

Startup proceeds normally, then after selecting a realm, it immediately gives the message, "Invalid  Session Please try restarting Minecraft"

or 

Startup proceeds normally, then after selecting a realm, it attempts to connect and after several seconds, it gives this message, "Failed to connect to the server Disconnected"
