keep falling through the ground after nether portal

I am playing on a server with my family. about 50% of the time when I load after leaving a nether portal (in either realm) I will spawn falling, and end up below the portal. This often will trap me in solid dirt/stone or leave me falling into lava if it is the nether... I cant tell you how frustrating it is! I have lost all my gear so many times!
