Breaking nether portal while teleporting still allows player to teleport

While teleporting inside the nether, player can break the portal and still will teleport. 

How to reproduce

Start by making a nether portal
Then get inside the nether portal, and while teleportation is commencing, break the portal
You will still end up teleporting.
Make sure to also set game rule playersNetherPortalCreativeDelay to 1.

Observations Breaking the portal while teleporting doesn't seem to stop teleportation.
Expectations Teleportation should stop commencing once the portal has been broken.
