Lectern becomes invisible in inventory

When I placed a lectern a few frames before a villager walked on the block, it disappeared, then later, I had 1 empty slot in my inventory, but couldn't pick anything up. I then put bread in that spot and the lectern reappeared. Any idea what happened?
