Saplings/Mushroooms not growing with bonemeal

Whenever I try to bonemeal any saplings/mushroom it doesn't work and will not grow. Tried in a completely new world and it still didn't work. It just suddenly started happening because before I was able to bonemeal mushrooms and saplings but now I suddenly can not do so.
