Game quits when I use hotbar

I'm on a Mac Airbook, using Java edition.
I just updated to version 1.20.2 when this started to occur.

What I expected to happen was...: To be able to drop items from the Equipment/Blocks selector to my hot bar OR to take items from my hotbar & place them in barrels or chests

What actually happened was...:
Game quit as though I'd hit the Esc button

Steps to Reproduce:
1.  Select E for Equipment selector
2. Choose an item
3. Click an empty space in the hotbar
