"/place feature amethyst geode" doesn't correctly work

Typing the command to place a geode (/place feature amethyst) only gives a message saying "Failed to place feature." I've tried going down to the appropriate Y-levels for natural geode spawning and providing what I felt was enough space to summon a whole exposed geode, and nothing is working.

NOTE: The version I used is 1.20.1 but there isn't an option for it in the "Affects Version" tab
