the dragon died but then came back full health

I was fighting the dragon and the first problem I saw was its health bar was not lowering. i kept fighting it and it eventually died and I got the achievement but the egg did not spawn and the dragon just came right back, the portal is still no turned on so I cant get back to the overworld without dying
