me and a friend where in a minecraft server and he was reading a book and quill and i started killing him he a thorns on his armor and i died to it and then the book disappears from his inventory

What I expected to happen was...:
i thought i would die and my friend would still have the book and quill 

What actually happened was...:
i died and the book and quill disappeared from his inventory 

Steps to Reproduce:
1. get a book and quill and start reading it and make sure your wearing netherite armor with thorns
2. then have someone with nothing in there inventory hit you until they die
3. when they die the book should disappear from your inventory
