Lost White Heart flashes disappear when pausing the game

Steps to Reproduce:
1) Jump into lava and try to pause just as the lost hearts flash white
2) Momentarily, the lost hearts will be white but then they immediately disappear

Note:
I'm not referring to the white outline of the entire health bar
