Slabs can be destroyed faster by axes

So I was playing on 1.5.2 minecraft server when suddenly I hit a cobblestone slab with a diamond axe. I tried to do this again on 1.6.2 singleplayer, it happened too, but when I destroyed the slab you don't get item dropped. You only destroy it faster.
