Chickens get stuck in cobblestone walls

I am using "Cobblestone Walls" for my animal pens. The chickens have a habit of getting stuck in the walls. I either have to dig out the dirt underneath them to free them or push them to one of the gates. This really only causes a problem when I am trying to breed them and the chickens are stuck in walls on opposite sides of the pen.
