When I go into boats I press W to go forward but to stop I keep going forward until my boat crashes I can't stop the boat

I was in Survival I got a boat I got in it and pressed W when I got to the island I pressed the stop control I think it's D but I couldn't stop or turn my boat around I kept going forward until the boat crashed to the island.
What I expected to happen was to stop the boat with D
What actually happened was the boat couldn't stop when I wanted it to stop
