When mining stone with a pickaxe, the blocks regenerate without leaving anything to collect

When i tried to mine stone with a pickaxe the block regenerated in the same place it was, very quickly without leaving any block to pick up. Also the block that I tried to mine would disappear next time i logged on Minecraft
