Trying to join a server it says logging in then disconnected

Whenever my friend tries to join any server at all in multiplayer it says logging in and then disconnected
we've tried

• turning off the firewall
• vpn
• checking the network connection
• restarting computer
• redownloading Minecraft launcher + minecraft
• rebooting network
