Green markers do not disappear after map has been removed from an item frame

I cannot find anything similar to this on the tracker.

Basically the green marker which indicates the map in an item frame stays persistent even after the map has been taken out of the frame. If you then take the map and place it elsewhere, it will create a new marker and it will stay too once you take the map out. I have tried the following things, 
1. Placing the map in the same spot and removing it
2. Relogging from the world when the map was in a frame, in my hand, in my off-hand and in my ender chest

Nothing seems to fix this.
