Game crashed with error code 6

This does not affect versions before 1.16.5, but from 1.17 onwards (I've not tested snapshots between 1.16.5 and 1.17 yet).

This is not due to unsupported hardware, since I've run minecraft multiple different linux distributions on the same machine and it has worked flawlessly.

I have restored a backup of my $HOME/.minecraft from an old installation, and this did not work and gave me the same error.

What I expected to happen was...:
The game would load

What actually happened was...:
The game crashed with error code 6
