filled lava bucket reverts to unfilled

in 1.19 pre1, I was filling lava buckets in the Nether, from an "infinite source" of lava. the buckets filled and were visibly full in the hotbar. I then opened a shulker box to place them, but then my inventory showed all empty buckets.
