When pistons extend, they are not there.

When the piston extends, it is not actually there, meaning that you can break blocks behind it.

First, you need to create a redstone clock. Then, get a piston going off of it. Finally, (this requires precise timing) try to break the piston and it usually breaks the blocks behind the piston.
