Deflected Ghast Fireball didn't inflict damage to the Ghast

I was minding my own business in the nether and saw a ghast, when I deflected the fire ball and hit the ghast in its hitbox, it just exploded and didn't do any damage. I tried it on a flat world and the only damage it registered was on the bottom.
