Hardcore mode switched game to normal survival

I recently started a hardcore survival world and I got off of it today (being in a hardcore game) and logged back in later and then it was the same world exactly where I saved last and it was a normal survival world. I'm not sure if its a bug or not but I'm not sure what I did. I logged off then logged back in and then the game switched from hardcore to normal survival.
