Can't read player chat, written books, some signs, but can read /msg

I cannot read chat from players, written books, and some signs (but not all, it seems to be random). I can see things like the tellraw command, when i change gamemode, pets are killed, things like that. I can see when a player does /msg to me. I can see my own chat but nobody else's.
