Wither End Return Portal Game Crash

After placing a wither underneath the end portal as pictured, the game crashes.

The short crash message reads as follows:

The game crashed whilst ticking entity
Error: java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "dnm.a()" because "$$1" is null
Exit Code: -1

Attempting to join the world again causes the game to delay and crash after a few seconds
