Items in a furnace will not smelt down unless there's an item in the fuel slot (NOT BURNT ALREADY FUEL) - Check video for example

If you cook something in a furnace - you need to burn some fuel for that, but if there are no items in the furnace while a fuel item is already burning - the item will not smelt
