Baby Chickens die in water in farm

I created a farm in survival. The bottom layer is 9 hoppers in a square that all feed into a chest. Above that is a layer of water surrounded by cobblestone and a fence gate.

Adult chickens survive just fine, but when introducing baby chickens via eggs or breeding, they die after about a minute. The two adult chickens I have in there seem to be fine though.
