Pistons get powered from extension when extended.

When you place a piston down and you power it, and then put a block on the end that is powered by redstone either by a repeater, redstone dust or placing a redstone block, it will remain extended while you take away the original power source.

Even when you give it a block update it will not retract until you remove the redstone-powered block from the top of the extended piston.
