Multiple Golems

Sorry if this isn't really a bug, but my village keeps creating gollums, there are 6 gollums and 18 villagers...none villagers have died, or been damaged (as far as I know) I am playing peaceful mode. All of these gollums are within 10 blocks or so of the bell, I even fenced one in near the bell, because I read the villagers will spawn gollums if they think there isn't one...

The gollums are a nuisance, they stand in doorways, preventing the villagers from entering or exiting, they get in my way of building things, why are there so many? I suppose in hard mode they would be benificial...but I have no use for them.  Not a big deal, but if anyone can tell me how to limit the gollum population, that would be great.
